Sources and checks
National accounts come from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), through its official data service (eSankhyiki, api.mospi.gov.in). Forecasts come from the Economic Survey and the Union Budget (indiabudget.gov.in) and the Reserve Bank of India (rbi.org.in). A program downloads every file, keeps a copy with its fingerprint (SHA-256), builds the data and checks it. Data last built 30 October 2026.

12,869 checks, all passing. The site cannot be built unless every check passes. Known problems in the official data are allowed only with a written reason, listed in the report.
- Accounting identities in every year, estimate and price basis: industries add up to total GVA; GDP = GVA + net product taxes; net taxes = taxes − subsidies; NDP = GDP − depreciation; national income = GDP + income from abroad; investment and saving by sector add up to the totals.
- Growth rates: every published annual and quarterly growth rate is compared with the GDP levels it should follow from.
- Quarters add up to the year.
- The long-run back series (1950-51 to 2011-12) joins the current series in 2011-12.
- Forecasts: each of the 16 Economic Survey and 93 RBI forecasts is stored with the sentence it was read from; the program finds that sentence in the downloaded document and checks the numbers in it. The 16 Budget GDP assumptions are read from the Budget at a Glance PDFs and their stated growth is re-computed.
- ✅ Every published row is understood
- ✅ Accounting identities hold in every estimate
- ✅ Published GDP growth rates follow from published GDP levels
- ✅ Quarters add up to the year; quarterly growth follows from levels
- ✅ Back series joins the current series
- ✅ Budget GDP assumption found and consistent
- ✅ Every forecast is quoted from its official document
- ✅ Spending side: size of the statistical discrepancy (for review, not failures)
- ✅ Large revisions to growth (for review, not failures)
Which numbers are shown
- Two series. MoSPI's 2011-12-base series (released January 2015) and its new 2022-23-base series (27 February 2026). Their levels are never mixed. Long-run charts use the 2011-12 base, which MoSPI has carried back to 1950-51.
- Estimate stages. A year's GDP is first estimated before the year ends and revised up to five times. Charts use the latest estimate unless they say otherwise; the Revisions page shows every stage.
- Growth rates are shown as MoSPI published them. For the back series (before 2012-13), which MoSPI publishes as levels only, growth is worked out from constant-price GDP and marked "from levels".
- Shares (of GDP, of GVA) divide two figures from the same year and the same estimate.
Problems found in the official data
- MoSPI labels taxes on products and subsidies on products as "₹ lakh", but the values are ₹ crore: taxes minus subsidies equal net product taxes exactly in crore. They are used as crore.
- One national disposable income figure is labelled with the year "1999" instead of a fiscal year. It is left out.
- For 2012-13 and 2013-14, MoSPI publishes two different "Additional Revision" growth rates for 83 industry figures. Neither is used.
- Net product taxes for the first advance and provisional estimates of 2014-15 and 2015-16 do not equal GDP minus GVA. GDP and GVA are shown; net taxes for those releases are not.
- Before 2004-05 the back series' industries do not add up to its total GVA (5% apart in 1950-51, 0.3% in 2000-01), as each industry was linked to the new base separately. Sector shares for those years are of the sum of industries.
- Some published growth rates cannot be reproduced exactly from today's levels, because they were measured against an earlier estimate of the previous year that MoSPI's data service no longer keeps. They are listed in the report.
- In the Budget 2025-26 PDF, the GDP figures are missing from the text layer; they were read from the page image and confirmed by the 10.1% growth printed beside them.

- Rural and urban split. MoSPI does not estimate GDP by rural and urban area each year (its last such estimate was for 2004-05). Rural and urban indicators that are published every year, such as consumer prices, unemployment and household spending, are planned.
- Revision history before 2011-12, from MoSPI's press releases of 2000-01 to 2010-11 on the earlier bases.
- IMF forecasts (World Economic Outlook).
- State GDP, which MoSPI also publishes.
