Household spending
In 2023-24 the average person in rural India spent ₹4,122 a month on consumption, and in urban India ₹6,996, 70% more, according to MoSPI's Household Consumption Expenditure Survey. Food was 47.0% of rural and 39.7% of urban spending.
About these figures
Figures are monthly consumption spending per person (MPCE), at the prices of the survey year, not adjusted for inflation. They exclude items households received free. Valuing those items (food from the public distribution system, school meals, laptops, bicycles and so on) at market prices raises the 2023-24 averages to ₹4,247 (rural) and ₹7,078 (urban). The survey was redesigned in 2022-23, so these two rounds are not directly comparable with earlier ones (last in 2011-12).
