Prices
Consumer prices were 5.54% higher in Sep 2026 than a year earlier (provisional), by MoSPI's new Consumer Price Index on base 2024; food prices were 7.74% higher. On the old series, which ended in December 2025, prices rose 2.2% on average in 2025.
Two series
MoSPI replaced its Consumer Price Index from January 2026. The old series (base 2012) runs from Jan 2013 to Dec 2025 and comes from MoSPI's data service. The new series (base 2024) uses a new basket and weights from the 2023-24 household spending survey (food and beverages fall from 42.6% to 36.8% of the combined index) and is read here from MoSPI's monthly press releases, as its figures are not yet in the data service. The two are shown side by side, never joined into one line. Since 2016 the RBI's target has been 4% inflation, with a band of 2% to 6%.
